The short answer

  • Adderall is not sold in Mexico. Mixed amphetamine salts are not approved by COFEPRIS, Mexico's equivalent of the FDA. Any "Adderall" offered at a Mexican pharmacy is unregistered and may be counterfeit.
  • Legal alternatives exist. Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Ritalin LA, Concerta), lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse, often out of stock, or the newer brand Tedans), atomoxetine (Strattera) and guanfacine ER (Intuniv).
  • Stimulants need a special Mexican prescription. A Mexican-licensed physician has to evaluate you and issue a barcoded prescription. A US prescription won't work at a Mexican pharmacy.
  • You can bring it home legally, with limits. US residents may bring back up to 50 dosage units of controlled medication obtained abroad, in the original container and declared to CBP (21 CFR 1301.26).

01 · Adderall

Why You Can't Buy Adderall in Mexico

Adderall is a brand of mixed amphetamine salts, a stimulant approved in the US to treat ADHD and narcolepsy. In Mexico it has no marketing authorization from COFEPRIS (the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks), so no pharmacy can legally sell it, with or without a prescription.

One of the most common questions I get from patients who cross from San Diego is whether they can fill their Adderall in Tijuana. The honest answer is no. The good news is that most adults find an effective alternative after a proper evaluation.

Red flag: if a pharmacy offers you "Adderall," it is selling an unregistered product. In a 2023 UCLA study, pills sold as Adderall in northern Mexico pharmacies contained methamphetamine.

What's the closest thing to Adderall in Mexico?

Lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse or Tedans) is the closest relative. It is a prodrug, which means your body converts it into dextroamphetamine, one of the active components of Adderall. Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) acts on the same brain chemicals, dopamine and norepinephrine, through a different mechanism. Neither is a one-to-one swap: moving from Adderall to either option needs a dose adjustment by your psychiatrist.

A note on Vyvanse and Tedans

Vyvanse is hard to find in Mexico right now, and COFEPRIS has issued alerts about counterfeit lots, most recently updated in April 2026. A newer lisdexamfetamine brand, Tedans, is now available with the same special prescription. Before choosing either one, I confirm with you that it's actually in stock.

03 · Prescriptions

How ADHD Prescriptions Work in Mexico

  • Stimulants are controlled. Methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse, Tedans) are Group II psychotropics under Article 245 of Mexico's General Health Law. They require a special prescription with a barcode, issued by a physician authorized by COFEPRIS.
  • Each special prescription is used once. The pharmacy keeps it when it fills your medication, so every fill needs a new prescription.
  • Non-stimulants are simpler. Atomoxetine and guanfacine need a regular prescription.
  • Prescriptions don't cross borders. A Mexican prescription can't be filled at a US pharmacy, and a US prescription can't be used to buy a stimulant in Mexico.
  • Nothing is over the counter. Despite what you may read online, no ADHD medication is legally sold in Mexico without a prescription.

04 · Crossing back

Bringing ADHD Medication Back to the US: The Rules

US federal rules allow you to bring medication you obtained legally abroad for your own treatment, as long as you follow these steps:

  1. Keep it in the original pharmacy container, with the label showing the medication and dose.
  2. Carry a copy of your prescription and the pharmacy receipt. The pharmacy keeps the original special prescription, so ask for a copy.
  3. Declare it to the CBP officer at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa, and say it's for your personal medical use.
  4. Respect the 50-unit limit for stimulants. A US resident may bring back no more than 50 dosage units combined of all controlled medications obtained abroad (21 CFR 1301.26). At one capsule a day, that covers about seven weeks.
  5. Non-stimulants follow FDA's personal-use guidance, which generally allows up to a three-month supply.
  6. Don't mail or ship controlled medication across the border. Carry it with you.

CBP officers have final discretion at the port of entry. This section summarizes federal rules and isn't legal advice.

05 · Safety

How to Avoid Counterfeit ADHD Medication in Mexico

68%of 40 pharmacies in four northern Mexico cities sold controlled medications without a prescription (UCLA, 2023)
11 of 40pharmacies sold counterfeit pills, including "Adderall" containing methamphetamine (UCLA, 2023)

COFEPRIS has also flagged specific counterfeit Vyvanse lots (alert issued June 2025, updated April 2026). Protect yourself:

  • Buy only with a prescription, at established pharmacy chains. A pharmacy that doesn't ask for one is a warning sign, not a convenience.
  • Check the box and lot number against COFEPRIS alerts, and keep your receipt.
  • Never buy stimulants from street vendors, websites or social media. It's illegal and you can't know what's inside.

How I Treat ADHD for Patients Who Cross from San Diego

My office is in the Zona Río medical district of Tijuana, about 15 minutes from the San Ysidro crossing. I see adults in English or Spanish. Not sure it's ADHD? Start with my free adult ADHD self-test.

  1. First visit, 60 minutes. A full psychiatric evaluation with in-office attention testing, and screening for conditions that can look like ADHD, such as anxiety, depression, sleep problems or substance use. Here's what the evaluation costs compared with the US.
  2. A treatment plan with what's actually available. I choose among the legal options in stock in Mexico, based on your history and any medication you've taken before.
  3. One-month follow-up. We review how you respond and adjust the dose.
  4. A monthly prescription plan. Once your dose works, I give you prescriptions for up to five months, so you only cross to pick up your medication. Your next full review is in month six.

I don't prescribe stimulants without an evaluation, and I don't prescribe by request. A medical pass for a faster lane back to San Diego is sold in the building lobby, subject to availability.

07 · FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy Adderall in Mexico?

No. Adderall (mixed amphetamine salts) isn't approved for sale in Mexico. Pills sold as "Adderall" in Mexican pharmacies are unregistered and may be counterfeit; a 2023 UCLA study found some contained methamphetamine.

What is the Mexican equivalent of Adderall?

There's no identical product. The closest options are lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse or Tedans), an amphetamine-class prodrug, and methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta). Switching requires a dose adjustment by a physician.

Is Vyvanse available in Mexico?

Rarely. Vyvanse is often out of stock in Mexico and COFEPRIS has flagged counterfeit lots. A newer lisdexamfetamine brand, Tedans, is available with the same special prescription, and I confirm stock before prescribing.

Can a US resident get an ADHD prescription from a Mexican doctor?

Yes. A Mexican-licensed physician can evaluate you and, if appropriate, issue a prescription that you fill at a pharmacy in Mexico. It can't be filled at a US pharmacy.

How much ADHD medication can I bring back from Mexico?

For stimulants, US residents can bring up to 50 dosage units combined of controlled medications obtained abroad, in the original container and declared to CBP. Non-controlled options like atomoxetine generally follow FDA's personal-use guidance of up to a three-month supply.

Do I need a prescription for Ritalin in Mexico?

Yes. Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) is a controlled medication in Mexico and requires a special barcoded prescription from a Mexican physician.

Do I have to come to Tijuana every month?

No. Once your dose is stable, I provide a monthly prescription plan for up to five months, so you only cross to pick up your medication at the pharmacy.
