The short answer

  • In the US, adult ADHD testing usually costs $150 to $5,000+ without insurance. Online screening and diagnosis runs about $150 to $900, an in-person clinical evaluation $1,000 to $2,500, and full neuropsychological testing $2,500 to $5,000 or more.
  • Most adults don't need the most expensive option. ADHD is diagnosed clinically: a detailed interview, your childhood history, rating scales and a look at conditions that mimic it. Neuropsychological testing is for specific situations.
  • In my office in Tijuana, a complete 60-minute evaluation is $125 USD and follow-up visits are $105 USD, in English or Spanish.
  • Wait times differ too. In a 2024 study, Los Angeles Medicaid patients waited a median of 64 days for a psychiatrist. Most of my new patients are seen within 3 to 5 days.

01 · US prices

What Adult ADHD Testing Costs in the US

An adult ADHD evaluation is a structured assessment that checks whether your symptoms meet DSM-5-TR criteria, started in childhood and affect your daily life. What you pay depends on who does it and how much testing is involved.

Type of evaluationWho does itTypical US cash priceBest for
Online screening and diagnosisTelehealth clinicians$150 to $900Straightforward cases; quality varies a lot
In-person clinical evaluationPsychiatrist or psychologist$1,000 to $2,500Most adults with suspected ADHD
Full neuropsychological testingNeuropsychologist$2,500 to $5,000+Learning disorders, brain injury, unclear or complex cases
Medication follow-up visitPsychiatrist$150 to $300 per visitOngoing treatment after diagnosis

The range is wide because a "test" can mean a 30-minute video call or eight hours of testing plus a written report. Location matters too: prices in San Diego and Los Angeles sit at the higher end.

02 · What you need

Do You Need a $3,000 Neuropsych Test to Diagnose ADHD?

Usually not. There is no blood test, brain scan or single computer test that confirms ADHD. Clinical guidelines such as NICE NG87 base the diagnosis on a specialist's clinical assessment: your symptoms, when they started and how much they interfere with your life.

Many patients arrive convinced they need a full day of testing before anyone will take them seriously. For most adults, a careful 60-minute evaluation answers the question. I recommend neuropsychological testing only when something else is in doubt.

Neuropsychological testing is worth paying for when:

  • A learning disorder, such as dyslexia, may be part of the picture.
  • There's a history of head injury or concern about memory decline.
  • A school or employer requires formal testing for accommodations.
  • A previous evaluation was inconclusive.

03 · With me

What My $125 Adult ADHD Evaluation Includes

  1. A 60-minute in-person evaluation with me, in English or Spanish. No 15-minute intake handed off to someone else.
  2. Your full history, childhood included. ADHD symptoms have to be present before age 12, so we go back to school years. Old report cards or a parent's input help.
  3. Rating scales and an in-office attention test. I use a performance test I designed for my practice, with a second version to measure change once you're on treatment.
  4. Screening for look-alikes. Anxiety, depression, poor sleep and substance use can all look like ADHD, and treating the wrong one wastes months.
  5. A diagnosis and a plan the same day. If medication makes sense, I choose among the ADHD medications legally available in Mexico and confirm what's in stock.

04 · First year

First-Year Cost of ADHD Care: US vs Tijuana

The evaluation is only the start. If you're diagnosed and treated, follow-ups add up. Here is a side-by-side example using the price ranges above.

ItemTypical US cash priceWith me in Tijuana
Evaluation$1,000 to $2,500 (in-person clinical)$125
One-month follow-up$150 to $300$105
Ongoing reviewsEvery 1 to 3 months, $150 to $300 eachEvery 6 months, $105 each, with prescriptions for up to five months in between
Year-one professional feesAbout $1,600 to $6,100$440 (four visits)

US figures combine the ranges in the table above (evaluation plus 4 to 12 follow-ups). Medication cost is separate in both countries and depends on the drug, dose and stock.

Be realistic about the trade-off: you'll cross the border for visits and to pick up medication, and US rules limit how much stimulant medication you can bring back at once. I explain those limits in my guide to bringing ADHD medication back from Mexico.

05 · Insurance and timing

Insurance, HSA and Wait Times

  • Insurance often covers a basic evaluation, in network. The catch is availability: in-network psychiatrists who are taking new patients can be hard to find.
  • Wait times can stretch for months. In a 2024 secret-shopper study published in JAMA, only 15% of Los Angeles psychiatrists listed as accepting Medicaid actually offered an appointment, and the median wait was 64 days.
  • Demand keeps growing. About 15.5 million US adults (6%) have ADHD, and more than half were diagnosed in adulthood, according to the CDC.
  • Medication access is part of the cost. In the same CDC survey, 71.5% of adults taking stimulants had trouble getting a prescription filled because of shortages.
  • HSA or FSA funds may apply. Medical care received abroad can qualify; confirm with your plan administrator before your visit.

I accept cash, credit and debit cards, Zelle and Venmo.

06 · Logistics

Getting Here from San Diego

My office is in New City Medical Plaza, in Tijuana's Zona Río medical district, about 15 minutes from the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Most patients walk across and take a short Uber. A medical pass for a faster lane back to San Diego is sold in the building lobby, subject to availability. You'll need a valid passport or passport card to return.

07 · FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an ADHD test cost without insurance?

In the US, expect about $150 to $900 for an online screening and diagnosis, $1,000 to $2,500 for an in-person clinical evaluation, and $2,500 to $5,000 or more for full neuropsychological testing.

How much does an adult ADHD evaluation cost in Tijuana?

With me, a complete 60-minute adult ADHD evaluation is $125 USD and follow-up visits are $105 USD. My office is about 15 minutes from the San Ysidro border crossing.

Do adults need neuropsychological testing to be diagnosed with ADHD?

Usually not. ADHD is diagnosed through a clinical evaluation of symptoms, childhood history and daily impact. Neuropsychological testing helps when a learning disorder, brain injury or memory problem is suspected, or when a school or employer requires it.

Is an online ADHD test enough for a diagnosis?

No. An online self-test can tell you whether an evaluation makes sense, but a diagnosis requires a clinician to review your history and rule out conditions that look like ADHD, such as anxiety, depression or poor sleep.

How long does an adult ADHD evaluation take?

My evaluation takes 60 minutes and you leave with a diagnosis and plan the same day. Full neuropsychological testing in the US usually takes several hours, often split across visits, plus time for a written report.

Can I get ADHD medication in Mexico after the evaluation?

If medication is appropriate, yes. I prescribe from the ADHD medications legally sold in Mexico, such as methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine. Adderall is not available in Mexico.
