The short answer

Wellbutrin (bupropion) is sold in Mexico as Wellbutrin LR by GSK and as generics such as Bipitrek and Ravec LP, but since July 14, 2026 it is a controlled psychotropic there, so you need a Mexican doctor's prescription that the pharmacy keeps, that covers two boxes at most and that expires after 30 days.

  • The new rule: a January 15, 2026 reform moved bupropion to Group III psychotropics, the tier of clonazepam.
  • In the US, nothing changed: bupropion isn't controlled, so the 90-day rule of thumb applies.
  • Price: Wellbutrin LR 150 mg costs about $87 for 30 tablets, versus about $2,597 for Wellbutrin XL in the US. Generics are cheaper in the US.
  • Safety: bupropion isn't for people with seizures or a current or past eating disorder.

01 · The name

What is Wellbutrin called in Mexico?

Wellbutrin is sold in Mexico as Wellbutrin LR, GSK's once-a-day bupropion in 150 and 300 mg tablets. Pharmacies also carry generic bupropion, which Mexican law calls anfebutamona, under names such as Bipitrek and Ravec LP.5

Bupropion is an NDRI antidepressant (it acts on norepinephrine and dopamine rather than serotonin). The FDA approves Wellbutrin XL for major depression and to prevent seasonal depression.4 ClinCalc counted about 30.3 million US bupropion prescriptions in 2023, the 17th most prescribed drug.8

The US uses XL (once a day) and SR (usually twice a day). In Mexico the brand is LR, and many generics say LP (liberación prolongada, extended release). Read the dosing on the label.

02 · The 2026 rule

Is bupropion a controlled drug in Mexico now?

Yes. Since July 14, 2026, bupropion is a Group III psychotropic under Article 245 of Mexico's General Health Law, so pharmacies must keep your prescription and log the sale.12

The decree published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación on January 15, 2026 listed "anfebutamona (bupropión)" and tramadol in section III, effective after 180 calendar days.1 Article 251 then requires the doctor's cédula profesional (Mexican license number) on the prescription:2

"Deberá surtirse por una sola vez y retenerse en la farmacia que la surta." (It must be filled only once and kept by the pharmacy that fills it.)

Ley General de Salud, Article 251
Pharmacies already apply it

On November 1, 2026, Benavides listed Wellbutrin LR, Bipitrek and Ravec LP as "Farmacia Controlado" (controlled sale) for in-store pickup, and WeCare noted that bupropion can't be shipped to a home.10

03 · For US patients

What does the new bupropion rule mean if you live in the US?

It means every purchase needs a new prescription from a Mexican-licensed doctor, and a US prescription won't work.

  1. Get a Mexican prescription with the doctor's printed name, address and cédula, the date and a handwritten signature (Reglamento de Insumos para la Salud, Article 29).3
  2. Fill it within 30 days. Article 226, section II, gives a retained prescription 30 days of validity.2
  3. Expect two boxes at most, the limit in the same article. At one 150 mg tablet a day, two 30-tablet boxes last 60 days.
  4. Photocopy it before you hand it over. The pharmacy keeps the original, and you'll want a copy for CBP.
  5. Buy in person at an established chain. Controlled sales are pickup only. I found no Cofepris (Mexico's drug regulator) alert about counterfeit bupropion as of November 1, 2026.

04 · Price

How much does Wellbutrin cost in Mexico vs. the US?

Brand Wellbutrin costs about $87 to $99 a month in Mexico versus $2,597 to $3,426 for Wellbutrin XL in the US, but generic bupropion is usually cheaper in the US.

Approximate cash prices for 30 tablets, checked November 1, 2026. Mexico converted at Banxico's FIX rate of 18.80 pesos per dollar (October 30, 2026).

The honest takeaway: if generic bupropion XL works and you have a US prescriber, San Diego is cheaper. Mexico makes sense for the brand.

05 · Bringing it back

Can you bring Wellbutrin from Mexico to the US?

Usually yes. Bupropion is not a controlled substance in the US, so you can bring a personal supply of up to about 90 days if you declare it to CBP, keep the original box and carry a prescription copy.71415

Bupropion doesn't appear in the DEA's October 2026 list of controlled substances, so the 50-unit limit for controlled drugs bought abroad doesn't apply.7 One Mexican prescription rarely covers more than 60 days anyway. See my guide to bringing medication from Mexico, and see whether a Mexican prescription works at a US pharmacy.

CBP officers have final discretion at the port of entry. This summarizes federal guidance and isn't legal advice.

06 · Safety

Who should not take bupropion?

People with a seizure disorder, a current or past diagnosis of bulimia or anorexia, or who are abruptly stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates or antiseizure drugs should not take bupropion, according to the FDA label.4

  • Seizure risk rises with the dose. The FDA's 2025 Wellbutrin XL label reports about 0.1% with sustained-release bupropion up to 300 mg a day and about 0.4% with immediate-release at 300 to 450 mg.4
  • Never combine it with MAO inhibitors (or within 14 days), linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or with another bupropion product.
  • Swallow it whole; don't crush, chew or split it.
  • The Mexican label also excludes people under 18 and those with a brain tumor or severe cirrhosis.5

One upside: in a 2024 Annals of Internal Medicine study of 183,118 adults, people on bupropion gained 0.22 kg less than those on sertraline at 6 months.9

"Before I prescribe bupropion, I ask about seizures, head injuries, eating disorders and alcohol, every time. It's an excellent antidepressant for the right person and the wrong one for others."Dr. B. Ernesto Cedillo Ramírez, psychiatrist in Tijuana

If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US, or call Línea de la Vida at 800 911 2000 or 911 in Mexico. The FDA warns these thoughts can increase early in treatment in young people.

07 · Switching

Can you switch from Wellbutrin XL to a Mexican brand?

Usually yes. Wellbutrin LR is taken once a day like Wellbutrin XL, and the FDA label says to keep the same total daily dose when switching between bupropion forms.4

  • XL once a day usually maps to Wellbutrin LR at the same strength.
  • SR twice a day: some Mexican LP generics are dosed twice a day on their Mexican label, at least 8 hours apart.6 Confirm the schedule with your doctor.
  • Don't stop suddenly while you sort out a prescription.

08 · Care with me

Can a Tijuana psychiatrist prescribe Wellbutrin for a San Diego patient?

Yes. A Mexican-licensed psychiatrist can evaluate you in Tijuana and issue the retained prescription bupropion now requires, to fill at a Mexican pharmacy. It can't be filled in California.

In my practice, the first visit is a full evaluation, not a refill stop. I review seizure risk, eating history and past treatments, and we plan how many boxes each prescription covers. If you're stable, any Mexican physician with a cédula can renew it.

  1. First visit, in person, 60 minutes, $125, in English or Spanish.
  2. Follow-up, 60 minutes, $105, in person or by video if you're physically in Mexico.
  3. A superbill on request (an itemized receipt with ICD-10 and CPT codes) for out-of-network reimbursement. I don't accept insurance.

09 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Wellbutrin in Mexico

Is Wellbutrin a controlled substance in Mexico?

Yes, since July 14, 2026. A reform published on January 15, 2026 added bupropion to Group III psychotropics under Mexico's General Health Law. Pharmacies now keep the prescription, fill it once, sell two boxes at most and accept it only within 30 days of its date.

What is Wellbutrin called in Mexico?

The brand is Wellbutrin LR, made by GSK México in 150 and 300 mg once-a-day tablets. Generic bupropion, called anfebutamona in Mexican law, is sold under names such as Bipitrek and Ravec LP. The US letters XL and SR don't appear on Mexican boxes, so check the dosing.

Can you buy Wellbutrin in Mexico with a US prescription?

No. A US prescription isn't valid at a Mexican pharmacy, and since July 2026 bupropion needs a retained Mexican prescription with the doctor's cédula profesional. You'll need an evaluation by a Mexican-licensed physician, and every new purchase needs a new prescription.

How much is Wellbutrin in Mexico?

Wellbutrin LR 150 mg costs about $1,638 pesos, roughly $87 USD, for 30 tablets, and the 300 mg about $1,861 pesos, roughly $99 USD, as of November 2026. Generics such as Bipitrek or Ravec LP cost about $35 to $75 USD.

Is bupropion a controlled substance in the US?

No. Bupropion doesn't appear on the DEA's list of controlled substances, so the 50-dosage-unit limit for controlled drugs bought abroad doesn't apply. It's a prescription drug, so bringing it from Mexico follows FDA and CBP personal-use guidance: declare it, keep the box and stay within 90 days.

Can I bring Wellbutrin from Mexico to the US?

Usually yes. Declare it to CBP at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa, keep it in the original box and carry a copy of your Mexican prescription, since the pharmacy keeps the original. Bring no more than a 90-day supply; one Mexican prescription usually covers about 60 days.
