The short answer

  • Zoloft is sold in Mexico as Altruline. That's the original sertraline brand, now marketed by Viatris, and you'll also find many inexpensive generics. I found no Mexican pharmacy selling it under the name "Zoloft."
  • Generic sertraline costs about $10 USD a month in Mexico, roughly what you'd pay in the US with a discount card. The real savings are on the brand and on the doctor's visit.
  • You legally need a Mexican prescription. Sertraline isn't a controlled drug in Mexico, but its box states that it requires a prescription, and a US prescription isn't valid at a Mexican pharmacy.
  • You can usually bring it home. Sertraline isn't a controlled substance in the US. Keep it in the original box, carry your prescription, declare it to CBP, and bring no more than a three-month supply.

01 · The name

What Is Zoloft Called in Mexico?

Zoloft is the US brand name of sertraline, an antidepressant from the SSRI class (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). It treats depression, panic disorder, OCD, PTSD and social anxiety.

#11most prescribed medication in the US in 2023, with 42.6 million prescriptions (ClinCalc)
Altrulinethe original sertraline brand in Mexico, originally from Pfizer and now marketed by Viatris

In Mexico, ask for sertralina (ser-trah-LEE-nah). That's the name printed on every box, brand or generic.

Name you'll seeTypeStrengths in Mexico
AltrulineOriginal brand (Viatris)50 mg tablets, 100 mg capsules
SertexBrand (Psicofarma)50 mg tablets
AlevalBrand (Sun Pharma)50 mg tablets
Tressvin, EquivacBrands50 mg tablets
Sertralina (generic)Generic: Farmacias Similares, Walmart, chain brands50 mg tablets

Many patients cross expecting to find a box that says Zoloft. It's the same medicine under a different name. What matters is the active ingredient, sertralina, and the dose.

02 · Price

How Much Does Sertraline Cost in Mexico vs. the US?

Prices for 30 tablets of 50 mg, converted at Banxico's exchange rate of 18.65 pesos per dollar (October 27, 2026).

ItemIn MexicoIn the US, without insurance
Generic sertraline 50 mgAbout $10 (Farmacias Similares, Walmart)$5 to $10 with a discount card; about $77 average retail without one
Brand: Altruline (MX) or Zoloft (US)$78 to $110About $466
First psychiatrist visit$125 with me$250 to $300 typical
Follow-up visit$105 with me$100 to $200 typical

The honest takeaway: if you take generic sertraline, you won't save much on the pills. The difference is in the brand, if you prefer it, and in the cost of seeing a psychiatrist who can evaluate you and adjust your treatment.

Prices change often and vary by store. Checked October 28, 2026.

03 · Prescriptions

Do You Need a Prescription for Sertraline in Mexico?

  • Yes, legally. Sertraline falls under section IV (fracción IV) of Article 226 of Mexico's General Health Law, so its box reads "Su venta requiere receta médica," which means sale requires a prescription.
  • It's not a controlled drug in Mexico. The pharmacy doesn't keep your prescription, and it can be refilled as many times as your doctor writes on it.
  • A US prescription isn't valid at a Mexican pharmacy. You need one from a Mexican-licensed physician.
  • Some pharmacies don't ask. Buying that way skips the evaluation that rules out bipolar disorder, drug interactions and other reasons sertraline might not be right for you.

04 · Crossing back

Bringing Sertraline Back to the US: The Rules

Sertraline is not a controlled substance in the US, so the 50-unit limit that applies to controlled drugs such as ADHD stimulants or clonazepam doesn't apply. What applies is FDA's personal importation guidance and CBP's rules for travelers:

  1. Keep it in the original box or pharmacy container, with the label showing the medication and dose.
  2. Carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor. If it's in Spanish, an English copy makes things easier at the port of entry.
  3. Declare it to the CBP officer at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa, and say it's for your personal use.
  4. Bring no more than a three-month supply. FDA says importing drugs for personal use is generally illegal, and its formal exceptions are narrow. In practice, CBP's rule of thumb for travelers is no more than a 90-day supply for personal use.
  5. Don't mail it across the border. Carry it with you.

CBP officers have final discretion at the port of entry. This section summarizes federal guidance and isn't legal advice.

Can a US pharmacy fill my Mexican prescription?

Usually not in California, where pharmacies generally accept prescriptions only from prescribers licensed in the US. Texas and Arizona do accept a Mexican doctor's prescription for non-controlled drugs like sertraline.

05 · Safety

Is Sertraline from a Mexican Pharmacy Safe?

68%of 40 pharmacies in northern Mexico sold controlled medications without a prescription (UCLA, 2023)
Opioids & Adderallwere the drugs found counterfeit in that study. It looked at controlled drugs, not antidepressants.

I haven't found any report of counterfeit sertraline in Mexico as of October 2026. That's reassuring, but it isn't a guarantee, so:

  • Buy at established chains such as Farmacias del Ahorro, Benavides, Farmacias Guadalajara, Farmacias Similares, Walmart or Costco, with a prescription.
  • Check that the box is sealed and keep your receipt.
  • Be wary of small pharmacies that offer prescription drugs without asking for a prescription.

06 · Switching

Switching from Zoloft to a Mexican Brand

Zoloft, Altruline and generic sertraline contain the same active ingredient, so in most cases you continue at the same dose. A few practical tips:

  • Once a brand works, stick with it instead of switching every month.
  • Tell your doctor if anything changes after a switch, like new side effects or a change in mood.
  • Never stop suddenly while you sort out a refill. Stopping abruptly can cause dizziness, nausea, irritability and insomnia, so FDA recommends tapering the dose gradually.
Get help right away if you have thoughts of harming yourself. FDA warns they can increase early in treatment in people under 25. In the US, call or text 988. In Mexico, call Línea de la Vida at 800 911 2000 or dial 911.
